Seeking peace and justice through harmony: Music and peacemaking

Peace &Change, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 366-372, October 2024.

Abstract

Peacemaking encompasses both positive efforts toward achieving a more just society and negative efforts to prevent or end violent conflicts and warfare. Popular music has often accompanied American peace and antiwar movements by arousing public concern for social justice, sustaining the hopes of activists, and challenging decision makers. This essay examines how musicians have made notable contributions to peace activism by addressing a diverse set of issues in American history.
